Why Is My Sewer Line Backing Up?

A sewer line backup is something no homeowner wants to deal with. Sometimes there are no signs that something could be wrong until your sewer is backing up into your house! Here are the most common reasons your sewer could be backing up:

  1. Clogs: Persistent clogs occur if items like "flushable" wipes, grease, oil, feminine products, and other items keep entering your drains and then into your sewer line. These items eventually build up and create a blockage. Avoid putting these items down your drains and toilets to prevent this issue.

  2. Tree Roots: Another common reason sewer lines can back up is tree root infiltration. Usually there is a small crack or loose joint in your sewer line, which allows warm vapors to escape into the soil. Tree roots will naturally be drawn to this warm moisture and start growing toward your sewer line and force their way in. The roots continue to grow and make that crack even bigger, create a blockage and could even collapse your sewer line. Also, if tree roots are not removed properly, they can grow back and create the same problem all over again.

  3. Sewer Line Damage: You may think a small crack in your sewer line may not be a big deal but it can turn into a serious issue. A cracked sewer line can allow dirt and rocks in, creating a blockage and eventually will lead to the waste backing up into your house.

  4. Sagging, Broken, or Collapsed Sewer Line: Sewer lines can break because of the reasons listed above, as well as many others. Aging pipes, above ground construction, shifting soil, and corrosion to name a few. No matter the reason, if your sewer line is sagging, broken, or collapsed, you will experience a backup and it will need to be fixed.
